South Downs Way Walk and Ring 11-18 May 2013

Ringers from Seaford are attempting to walk the South Downs Way from Winchester to Eastbourne to raise money for the Bell Restoration Fund and combine this with ringing at a variety of towers along the way. Plans are coming together and we hope that a number of you might like to join us in this venture.

We would welcome People to walk with us and encourage us on the route. Could you manage the whole route, a section of the route, a few miles or just a mile or two; People to assist with transport to take us from the actual route to the chosen towers; People to open towers and arrange additional ringers to support our team People who might be able to offer accommodation along the route.
We have a provisional programme as follows although we have not yet contacted all the towers on the route as we need yet to check approximate times e

Sussex Big Ring Day - 29 September 2012

Bells have featured widely this year, due to the Jubilee and Olympics, and so the idea behind the Big Ring Day is more of a local tower open day to help individual towers who wish to build on the recent publicity about bells in general (eg from the Martin Creed project), and perhaps capture any potential new recruits.

Attached are a few ideas, plus electronic bellringing leaflets that Hurstpierpoint and Storrington have produced; this may help towers to think about making their own versions (they will also soon be circulated to tower correspondents, as Word versions). The authors are happy

Essex Trophy 2012

This is an annual striking competition held between teams from various associations in the south east. This year it was hosted by SCACR at Southover on Saturday 8th September. Of a possible eight teams only four took part, ringing a specially composed touch of 315 Stedman Caters. The judge was Alan Ainsworth from Amersham who is ringing master at St Paul’s cathedral.

The weather was hot and sunny, ideal for those taking part to mingle whilst not ringing. This, however, seemed to result in traffic jams on the roads into Sussex resulting in a slightly delayed start. Southover ringers did us really proud with the arrangements for the afternoon.

Sussex came a creditable second behind winners Kent; this is the first time they had won the competition since 1985 having finished second for the previous two years. The full results are as follows: 1st Kent: 55 faults, 2nd Sussex: 71 faults, 3rd Essex: 103 faults, 4th Guildford: 111 faults

One extra to the afternoon was that Adrial Walton had arranged some ringers from the southern division to come along and have a go at attempting to judge the competition as part of a follow up to her listening session held earlier in the year.

MARTIN CREED PROJECT NUMBER 1197 (http://www.allthebells.com/)

Love it or loath it, this project is getting a lot of publicity in the media. It would appear that even BBC Radio 2 is going to feature it live on the morning of Friday 27 July.

Is your tower taking part? If so, there is some information available that you might find useful. Firstly, there is the poster to say that your bells will be sounded as part of this project – perhaps you could display it on your church noticeboard? Secondly, there is a press release, issued from the The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games, containing facts about the project and Martin Creed himself.

Please do consider getting involved with the project, and make the most of this national event to raise the profile of bellringing in Sussex. If you intend to take part, perhaps let your local newspaper know as they may be interested in writing an article.
