Ringing for Peace: recruiting ringers for Armistice Day 2018

This weekend, half-muffled bells rang out across Sussex to commemorate Armistice Day. Next year will be the centenary of the end of World War I, in which more than 50 Sussex ringers lost their lives. In memory of the 1400 bell ringers who died in the First World War, a new national campaign was launched today [12 Nov 2017] to recruit 1400 new bell ringers to participate in the 2018 centenary ringing. This is a call out to all of us and an opportunity for everyone, a chance to make the wonderful ancient tradition of bell ringing open to all. Join the project and become a bell ringer today in memory of the 1400 who lost their lives.

The campaign launch received nationwide media coverage. The ringers of Northchapel, West Sussex, were featured by The Telegraph. What a Surprise! A Grand(sire) day out Developing skills with Bob!

Surprise course at Warnham

This year’s 2-day SCACR ringing courses (27/28 Oct 2017) have now come and gone, with excellent progress made by those who attended the ‘Developing Method Ringing Skills’, ‘Getting to Grips with Grandsire’, ‘Plain Bob Doubles’ and ‘Starting Surprise’ courses.

These special intensive courses rely heavily on the support of experienced ringers who give their time to support the training of others and we’re very grateful for everyone’s help over the two days. Special thanks to Anne Franklin for her work in organising everything this year.

First Open 'Association of Ringing Teachers' (ART) course for Sussex

ART M1 Course

Saturday the 14th of October saw 10 ringers from across Sussex gather at Southover, Lewes for the first open course run in the county by the Association of Ringing Teachers (ART). The course was part of their ‘SmART Ringer’ Teaching Programme that aims to offer training, support and motivation to ringing teachers. The course was kindly organised by Clare Cullen, a ringer from Trinity Church, Southover and our tutor for the day was Gillian Hughes.

The day was split between theory and practical sessions, with the majority of the weighting on practical, hands on demonstrations and role playing of teacher and learner. This gave us all plenty of time to practice the techniques we were being shown. (Everyone enjoyed simulating bad handling habits for our ‘teachers’ to correct!)
