In my message on Saturday I said that the situation regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19) was evolving, and over the past twenty four hours fresh advice has been issued by the UK Government.
The latest advice, announced by Boris Johnson on Monday, seeks to introduce social distancing to help slow the spread of the virus - it is now believed that we are moving into the fast growth phase of the infection curve:
On Monday evening I spoke with the trustees and officers of the Association to decide the best way in which we as an association can comply with the latest advice. Unanimous agreement was reached that we should suspend all Association events until 30th April. This suspension will be reviewed regularly and may possibly have to be extended dependant on the progression of the Coronavirus pandemic.
The Central Council of Church Bell Ringers have also issued advice suggesting that now is the time to stop ringing activities.
A number of towers in Sussex have already decided to suspend ringing, both on practice nights and for service ringing. Please seek advice from your Vicar or PCC to help decide whether it is appropriate for your tower to continue ringing.
If you do have to stop ringing at your tower please consider the following points:
- Ensure that bells are left down and ropes are secured on a spider where possible
- Be aware that ringing may be the main social contact for some members of the band: stay in contact with each other by phone, messaging or on social media.
This situation is unprecedented, never in peacetime have the bells of Sussex fallen silent. But, we must do what is right, to help prevent the spread of this disease and reduce the number of potential victims.
A further commuication will be sent to update on a timescale for the resumption of Association events.
