Event Description:

Eastern District Monthly Practice

Join us for the September event with three towers along the Kent border

The confirmed schedule is:

  • Brede 11:00-12:00
  • Lunch (Own Arrangments)
  • Beckley 13:30-14:15
  • Peasmarsh 14:30-15:15

We start the day at Brede, which once had a wharf and tramway, with ships coming up from Rye to supply the pumping station below the church, which is on the hill (sadly the Steam Giants museum isn't open on the day we are visiting!).  The church here houses the oldest bell we will see today, one from c1475, and has a total of 6 bells, with the others being 17th and 20th century, the tenor being a healthy 13cwt.

Lunch is by own arrangement before heading off to Beckley, where the church of Grade I listed church of All Saints is on the western end of this elongated village  It is less than a mile from Northiam church as the crow files.  There are 6 bells, dating from the 18th to 20th centuries, the tenor tipping the scales at a smidge over 12cwt.

We then move on to Peasmarsh, where this 9½cwt ring of six in the Grade I listed Norman church of St Peter & St Paul.  The six bells here are a mix of 17th and 19th century, with two "new" Dutch trebles from 1988.
