Report from Thakeham Tower
On the evening of 2 December 2006, a concert entitled “With
Christmas in Mind” was held in Thakeham church in aid of the
Bell Restoration Fund.
It was performed by the Shoreham Chamber Choir who were joined by a
choir of Swedish girls dressed in national costume, all under the
direction of Lena Urqhuart. The varied programme included
songs in English, Latin and Swedish. The evening concluded
with everyone joining in carol singing, accompanied at the organ by
John Kaye. The concert was a great success financially and
very much enjoyed by everyone present.
During the past two years we have worked very hard to raise sufficient
funds to pay for the refurbishment work to the Thakeham
bells. This last concert has completed the task and the
bellringers would like to thank everyone who has supported them in this
project.
We are now pleased to report that the Whitechapel Bell Foundry have
completed the task of refurbishment. Neil Thomas, one of the
bell hangers, carried out the work with the help of local
ringers. We had three very enjoyable days working with him;
the end result is one with which we are very pleased. The
work was carried out on time and within budget, therefore I would not
have any hesitation in recommending them to other towers wishing to do
this sort of work.
Roger Watts, Thakeham
