From the Editor…

Again we take pleasure in offering you a mixed bag of articles on Sussex ringing and ringers.  SOUNDBOW has, as one of its objectives, the task of giving some account of the many activities that are taking place in the Association.  This account cannot be exhaustive - for that we read the excellent divisional newsletters - but there is sufficient here to show just how much is happening and how energetic, enthusiastic and committed many member are throughout the county.  In previous editions we have published thoughtful articles about the challenges we face, challenges of recruitment, standards and organisation.  I hope that these pages will serve as a reminder that there is much that is good that is already happening in the Association and that this will serve as a firm foundation from which to progress.

Ian Hastilow, our Master, has been at the centre of many activities but as we go to press he is nearing the end of his third year of office.  Our constitution requires him to retire but as he does so we would like to acknowledge and thank him for all that he has given to the Association.  The responsibilities of his office are relentless and demanding but he has always led and supported with energy and enthusiasm.  He will of course continue to be a Sussex ringer and already he is looking at other ways he can serve the ringers, but in the meantime we can only thank him, advise a little rest and wish him a period of relaxed ringing.

As this edition of SOUNDBOW emerges we will be electing Ian's replacement.  Whoever it is there will be matters to deal with and challenges to confront and we will run a feature on the new Master in the next edition.  In the meantime we hope you enjoy reading the thoughts, researches and opinions of our contributors and, of course, you can always respond with a letter!
