Big O Celebrations

2 Edna Everest's 70th Birthday Celebrations

On 13 December 2006 our Tower Captain, Edna Everest, celebrated her 70th birthday.  Edna has been ringing church bells for 59 years and has been Tower Captain at Wivelsfield for the last 35 years.

To celebrate Edna's birthday we rang a full peal on Saturday 09 December.  This was the first peal on these bells for over 20 years.

The peal took 2 hours and 32 minutes to ring and as we came into rounds at the end we were greeted by a rapturous applause from outside of the bell tower.  Upon opening the door we found Edna, the Reverend Christopher Breeds (Vicar of Wivelsfield), many of Edna's ringing friends and some of the local residents.  Fortunately they all commented on how good the ringing had been!

As well as Wivelsfield, four other towers were represented in the peal - Derby Cathedral; St. Nicholas Ashill, Norfolk; St. Peters, Brighton and St. Cosmos & St. Damian, Keymer.  The band included three members of Edna's family (two nephews and a brother in law) and three of Edna' close friends.

After some open ringing for Edna's friends, the six ringers and the 'birthday girl' retired to a nearby pub for some lunch and to quench their thirst.
