A New Challenge
Over the past years since the formation of the Sussex Churches Bell
Restoration Fund (BRF), we have been fortunate to be able to offer
generous grants to help fund numerous projects throughout the
county. As a registered charity, however, we have to be
careful with regards to the amount of money raised as against what is
given. The Charity Commissioners are not keen to see large
sums of money raised and then not spent.
On the horizon are a significant number of projects and there is a
danger that we may not be able to continue offering grants at the level
to which we have grown accustomed. The BRF committee has
therefore felt it necessary to bring this matter to the attention of
the general membership. There now needs to be greater
emphasis on raising money for the BRF. Whilst a sum in excess
of £20,000 in the bank may seem a large amount in the terms
of grants being offered, it is not! For example, Rusper have
been offered a grant of £15,000.
If we are to hand on to future generations of Sussex bellringers
installations that are fit for purpose, these sums of money will
continue to be spent. Already we have seen some good sums
raised at various events such as the Quiz Night at Horsham last
November. In the planning stages is an Open Day on August
25th 2007. This will need a lot of help to make it a success
– from those who allow ringing at their towers and those who
feel able to assist as tower stewards to look after ringing the
day. So do put the date in your diary!!
Please bear the BRF in mind in the future and do consider allowing the
committee to help you and your tower should the need arise.
Finally, perhaps as important as restoration is routine
maintenance. To assist with this the BRF is in the process of
arranging some practical maintenance training. If you are
interested in this, please contact a member of the committee.

Fund Secretary
